Dog training schools can be very beneficial for both the pet and the owner. The common conception about these schools is that they train your dog to behave better. Actually, this is not the whole story. What dog training schools aim to do (at least the good ones) is teach the owners how to properly handle their dogs.

Think of it this way — do you think there is a way to train a dog to be obedient in a short time that would cause them to be obedient forever? Behavior modification requires constant reinforcement to be done over an extended period of time. This means that after your dog has graduated from school, you will be required to continue the training.

Many people who use training schools for their dogs are wishing for a magic bullet, but they just won’t get it. In fact, the owners who attend the classes with their pets have a higher success rate of actually making the training stick afterwards than those who just simply send their dogs off to training school.

For example, a reward system to reinforce good behavior is used by every reputable school in existence. Some schools may reward a dog with a treat, while others may do so with a sign of affection or a mixture of both. It is important that you stick with the same type of positive reinforcement after the dog has been trained. Otherwise, if you change the reward you give for positive reinforcement you can confuse the dog and make their behavior inconsistent.

The same goes for negative reinforcement as well. It is important to be consistent with how the dog has been trained to be punished after they have completed their training. Usually punishments are simple, like an authoritative no or a simple tug on the collar.

Finally, it is important to take the time to research your options when it comes to dog training schools before you sign up for one. Just like anything, there are good schools and there are bad schools Make sure that you go with a top-notch school. Make sure the school matches your own beliefs about how a dog should be trained.

Be aware of dogs and kids together.

Children likes to play with dogs, but do supervise this in case either the child or the dog gets hurt. A child may hit a dog in the eye, stand on it, pull its tail or pick it up wrongly. The nails of the dog or its teeth can hurt the child. If a dog feels threatened or frightened — it will defend itself.

Parents need to teach their children how to treat and handle a dog. If you can’t train the dog, train the child instead. Training a dog to respect a child can be difficult, as the dog may see the child as a playmate or underling, and not “the real master”.

The child needs to understand, that a growl means; stop your actions. The next step, even more threading, is the snarl; the dog bares its teeth and its eyes are becoming bigger. Its raises his hackles to make itself look bigger and more ferocious.(trick from the animals world). The snarl mean, stop your actions or I WILL BITE. Last warning from me.

Children need to be taught never to touch a strange dog, in spite it seems friendly. Tail-wagging can mean the dog is insecure. Kids should NEVER look a strange dog in the eye, as the dog may see it as a challenge. Children should never run away from or past a dog, but walk slowly or stand complete still. Dogs often chase runners and fast moving things like bicycles, and cars. Screaming can alarm the dog and could make the situation worse, if the dog is about to attack. Instead the child should call the dog and let the dog be the one to approach the child. The dog is then showing submission.

Children should NEVER touch a dog’s toy, bone, water or food. They should respect a dog’s privacy. Puppies need lots of naps during the day to give their body time to grow. Leave the puppie alone, while it is a sleep. Take especially care of the child, if bitches with puppies are around. They are very fierce to defend their young ones.

If a dog is threatens a kid, tell him to distract the dog with a stick to throw (not at the dog) or a lunchbox or a toy. Take the attention away from the attack-situation. Children can protect their face with a bag or a jacket and finally, if you can, teach the child to be calm.

Nearly all of the puppies owned by Americans make their home indoors. Dogs kept inside with your family and you need to be housebroken. Potty training a puppy is one of the situations many owners find themselves overwhelmed by. It is not that difficult, it doesn’t have to be messy and housebreaking can be accomplished without a struggle. You have to keep in mind though that this is a training issue and you have to put in a little more than just casual effort. You will need time, a little more involvement, as well as some training tools such as puppy training pads.

The Puppy Rules

Two guiding rules exist for helping puppies and dog owners in puppy training. Remember to never punish your puppy for something you didn’t see him do. And second, praise your puppy for the things he did do right. Do not train by only using “no” when you see your dog doing something it should not be doing. Desirable behavior should be met with praise and treats.

Housebreaking/House Training your Puppy

There are many different techniques to house train your pup. When starting indoors, encourage your pup to use puppy training pads or papers to go to the bathroom on. Puppy pads generally are treated with scented chemicals that lure pups and get them to use the pads. The moment you observe them beginning the pre-elimination routine of pacing and sniffing at the floor, lift up the puppy and quietly relocate them to the paper or puppy training pads, and then offer them a reward for appropriately going to the bathroom.

When the new dog is comfortable with the papers or puppy training pads, they can then be put near the door or even outside. The transition is accomplished by focusing their toilet habits in a specific in the home to an outside place. In the very near future you will have no need for papers or training pads indoors.

The biggest issue with this method of puppy potty training is that is requires more time to get the puppy to go indoors. When house training puppies, other widely used techniques might work; you could, for example, use puppy crate training or cages, always accompanied by the owner’s close supervision.

When using a cage or crate to housebreak your puppy, realize that puppies can’t go for more than about seven to eight hours without using the bathroom. Crate training usually works because dogs do not like to mess their sleeping places, then have to lie in it. Leaving them in their cage or crate for very long, however, is not good to do.

This is not to say, though, that continual supervision involves crates or cages, and paper or puppy pads. It is here that dog owners opt to spend whatever time is necessary with their pups. This works good for those who are retired, work from home, or any owner that can spend lots of time with the puppy. Pet owners can normally usher their dog outside as soon as the pre-potty signs are noticed with this technique. A constant watch must be kept on puppies to make sure that there are no accidents or slip-ups.

To summarize, housebreaking and training your puppy should be included along with teaching them the basic commands like ‘come’ and ‘stay’. However, housebreaking and potty training a puppy are always the messiest lessons, and will usually give you more problems than any other form of dog training. Don’t give up!

Related Articles:
Puppy Crate Training – Effective Housebreaking for Puppies
Puppy Training — How Do I Train My Puppy?

We all love our dogs, they are the best pet one could have. But we also love our dogs to behave and do as we tell them to stop them being naughty.

A naughty dog can be very stressful. Ripping up clothes, furniture, important mail that comes through your letterbox etc. Life can be much more easier when our dogs behave in the way we want them to.

Instead of coming home after a hard day at work to find your comfy slippers in shreds on the floor, how much nicer would it be if your dog greeted you by bringing your slippers to you? Home dog training means you will be able to experience that scenario.

Some people believe if a dog isn’t trained whilst it’s a puppy then it is too late. That’s simply not true. All dogs can be trained, whether a brand new pup, or a dog taken in as a stray.

What we have to remember is a dog has to learn our language just like we ourselves do. Using common every day words to order a dog whilst shouting is one of the biggest mistakes we make. If your dog is being naughty and you tell him to ‘come’, getting more louder every time you have to say it, only to them give him a smack on the bum when he does come, the dog will learn that if you are telling him to ‘come’ then that is a word that means he is about to get a smack.

But we then tell him to ‘come’ so he can eat his food. When he finaly plucks up the courage to come he then finds a tasty meal. This is confusion for the dog, he is now not sure whether ‘come’ means he has been naughty or whether it means he has been good and is getting rewarded. Simple mistakes like this can easily corrected with home dog training.

There are two reasons I believe home dog training is better than taking them to a school to be trained :

1, The cost involved. Money is getting tighter for all of us. Instead of having to find a weekly fee to pay someone to train your dog, home dog training can be done far cheaper and it will be just as easy for you to do it as opposed to a stranger.

2, I’m sure we all remember moments when we were at school where one of our classmates decided to be naughty in a lesson? Finding it funny, either ourself or another classmate most likely joined in. With someone else being naughty, or even a couple of others, it gave us a feeling of safety in numbers. It’s unreasonable to think there won’t be at least one dog at the training school who is a little bit more naughty than most. Just like back in our school days dogs like to have fun just as much as we did. Our dog can just as easily be led astray by this naughty dog, taking longer and more lessons for our dog to be trained, and of course taking more of our money. Home dog training eliminates this as it’s just you and your dog.

So lets elimiate the stress that a naughty dog brings and save ourselves money in the long run by doing it. No more flowers pulled out in the garden, no more furniture chewed up, no more mail in shreds and instead our beloved dog gretting us as we come home and bringing with him our slippers. Home dog training can work for you and your ‘best friend’.

There are a great many tools that can be utilized in dog training schools. All of these tools are quite helpful when utilized in the training of a dog. The following will introduce you to some of the tools that are utilized in dog training schools and how they can benefit you in the training of your dog.

The clicker is a very useful tool that is used in a lot of dog training schools. What exactly is a clicker you might be wondering? A clicker is a small object that is made out of plastic and contains a small piece of metal inside. The clicker makes a clicking noise when it is squeezed and then released. Using a clicker is a great way to get your dogs attention and once he learns the noise that it makes he will be able to recognize it almost anywhere.

Another tool that you will often find in dog training schools would be the dog leash. The dog leash by far is one of the most commonly used while training a dog. Dog leashes come in a variety of sizes from very short leashes that are used when a trainer wants to exert more control while training to much longer leashes that are used when behaviors that require a bit more freedom are being taught to dogs. There are even leashes that allow dogs a certain amount of freedom then automatically recoil when the trainer wishes the dog to return to them.

A tool that has become quite popular in dog training schools as well as widely enjoyed by dogs themselves is the treat carrier. These special containers allow a dog trainer to be able to carry around a supply of dog treats to use while training their dog. They are quite handy and keep you from having to get your clothing dirty or having to carry around treats in a plastic bag, which could get quite cumbersome.

A tool that is often utilized in dog training schools if a dog has issues with biting is a muzzle. A dog needs to be carefully introduced to this method of training and if the training is done properly it can be extremely efficient in ridding a dog of a potentially hurtful habit.

These are just a few tools of the trade that can be found in dog training schools. There are many more out there and the training tools can vary greatly depending on what type of training you are planning to do with your dog. If you are unsure as to what training tools you are going to need before you begin training your dog contact your local dog training school, as they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Hunting Dogs And Kids

Do not believe people who tell you that hunting dogs should be kept outdoors. This simply is not true. This is especially the case when it comes to gun dogs such as retrievers, spaniels and pointers. These dogs are not only excellent hunters, but they are also excellent pets.

Not all people get hunting dogs because they want to go hunting, although these dogs have a natural instinct for the hunt. Some people get these breeds because they are good family pets. Retrievers, for example, have very soft mouths as they have to pick up prey and bring it back to the hunter. For this reason, many people find that they are great pets for kids.

The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. Not only is an avid hunter who loves to swim, the Golden Retriever is an attractive dog with a docile personality. This is an excellent breed for a house with children.

How will the hunting dog treat the children? Most hunting dogs are pretty tough and can take a lot of manhandling that young kids are likely to dish out. Teach your children early on to treat the dog with respect and play gently with it as a puppy. Chances are that the dog will think of you as the top dog and the kids as his litter mates. The dog will have to be trained well to be a member of the family. This means that he should not be sitting at the table begging for food at dinner time or hopping on the furniture.

In order to keep your dog from begging at dinner, teach your kids not to feed him from the table. Smaller children often will be more than willing to share their food with the family dog. This gives the dog the indication that he is more than welcome to eat at the table and will induce begging. This may be cute at first, but will be very annoying if you have dinner guests. Larger dogs, such as Labs, can actually jump up and grab food from the plate while you are eating – that is anything but cute.

By teaching your kids respect for the dog and also instilling a love for animals, you will not only be doing a service to the dog, but to your own children as well. Few pets make as much of a lasting impression than a dog on a child. And while the hunting dog may be considered your dog, your hunting buddy – to the kids he is a pet.

Never leave your dog outside on his own and away from the family – this is a punishment to a dog. Dogs are social creatures. Hunting dogs should be more than welcome to be part of the family. And because they have been trained to be hunting dogs and have learned some discipline on the hunt, they make even better bets than dogs who are not trained at all. You will get valuable hunting time with your canine buddy – but your kids will learn life lessons from these gentle, yet hard working creatures.

I had my first pet back in 1985 – a puppy. It was actually not intentional as my parents were against the idea of keeping a puppy because there was just too much responsibility involved. However, it was a case of bullying that got me my first puppy. Yes, somehow my brother’s dog did not like his son and insisted on biting him and the little puppy was only 3 weeks old. Not wanting the poor puppy to grow up into a depressed and unhappy dog, he came under my care and that was how I had to start my search for puppies training tips as I did not want my parents to throw the puppy out for messing up our house!

Back then internet was still not popular so my knowledge had to come from books and books on puppies training were rather expensive. If the internet had been as easily accessible at that time, I would not have to burn a hole in my pockets! Recently, I had to help a friend to look for a good puppies training manual which is both informative and inexpensive and I happened to chance upon an online book – “Secrets To Dog Training”.

What is “Secrets To Dog Training” all about?
If you have just bought or adopted a puppy or a dog, you will need to train it so that it will listen to your instructions and not mess up your house. You will need a training manual that provides reliable content and workable methods for training your new pet. Upon comparison with the numerous puppies training books that I’ve read, I must say that the content covered in this book is very useful and easy to comprehend. The important point to note is that it is written by seasoned professional dog trainer who has many years of experience in dog training so his advice and tips are not based on theories only but have been tried and proven to be effective.

“Secrets to dog training” is an ebook that you can easily download from the internet immediately after you’ve made payment. What makes this manual effective and simple to use is that you will also get a 30 minutes video recording which helps you to easily learn the remedies to the common doggy misbehaviour that you would want to correct in your own puppy or older dog. In fact, the video recordings give such clear demonstrations that you can be off to try them out on your own puppies right away!

I was expecting this ebook to only talk about puppies training but how wrong I was. A lot of information is given in this ebook such as:
• How to select a suitable puppy?
• Where is the best place to get your new puppy?
• What important information you need to know about the breed of your puppy?
• How do you ensure that your home is safe for your new puppy/dog?
• How often should you bring your puppy to the vet?
• How do you correct the behavioral problems in your puppy?
• How can you prevent separation anxiety?
• How do you know if your puppy is sick?

Would I recommend this product?
The answer is a resounding ‘Yes!” because it is definitely a worthwhile investment. I thought I know everything about puppies training since I’ve started keeping dogs since I was a teenager but this book puts me to shame! I have read a lot of books on puppies training but nothing comes close to “Secrets to dog training”. I was most impressed by the section on dog whispering which teaches you how to train your puppies or dogs through communication and mutual respect instead of punishments. There are even step-by-step instructions for you to easily follow and apply immediately.

At such a low and affordable price, you not only get tons of puppies training tips and information, a step-by-step dog training manual, a video clip of practical solutions and even 4 bonus informative ebooks! Wow! A lot of times you get free bonuses that are basically useless but with this purchase, you get bonuses that you can use on your puppy such as how to groom your dog, how to resolve canine aggression problems, how to train your dog to keep your house safe, etc.

You can really solve a lot of your doggy problems when you purchase “Secrets to dog training” because you are even receive free consultations from a member of the Kingdom of Pets team by simply sending them an email with your queries! It is the first time I come across a company that caters to its customers needs even after the purchase has been made.

The only problem I get from buying this product is that I have a lot of reading and watching to do! I learnt a lot of puppies training tips from the ebooks and I had so much fun training my puppy after that. If only this product had been around in the past, I would not have made so many mistakes when I was training my earlier puppies!

Are you well aware that prior to you enroll your dog in a dog training obedience classes it is essential that you first of all train your dog at the comforts of your own household? Yes, you might not be informed of how significant dog training in your home is, just it’s extremely critical because it will function as the basis of their training. There are in reality three types of house training categories and those include basic house training where you instruct your pet of how to properly make use of the toilet area. Next is the submissive wetting, where urination happens when the dog is too excited. The last type is marking which should be done upon reaching puberty. There are those male dogs that will mark their territory.

House training your dog should only be done for two weeks as they’re solely destined to establish a routine. But for those dogs that had already developed bad attitude, retraining can last for a longer period of time, you would be looking for about 6 weeks training. To train a dog, you must learn to be committed on the project and consistent enough in the command you’re giving them. You have to become prepared enough once the training begins and that include determining the area where the training will take place.

As soon as you get the pup, visit a veterinarian right ahead for a complete check-up in order to make sure that your puppy is well fit and he is not suffering from any known medical complication which could hind the success of dog training in your home. Problems as intestinal parasites, abdominal problems, and urinary tract infections can make house training harder or even not possible the least bit.

Dog training in your home should start out with toilet training. Choose an empty piece of land around your house or a specific corner of the backyard. You are required to have a specified area where the dog will be trained to avoid confusion. You would want to schedule the training to and whenever you can’t adhere to the schedule and so you must not expect the dog to stick to any of your command. Try to feed him food which wouldn’t disturb their GI tract. Ward off free feed as much as possible until the training is completed. To establish discipline in his behavior, schedule the bed time and wakening time.

Take into consideration that young puppies will require frequent nap times, make certain that your schedule can accommodate their need. And if during training in your home, the dog starts to make errors, determinedly but gently say “No” and take the dog straight to his toilet area. Don’t scream in horror at the dog nor even go after him. Always keep in mind that your attitude is among the most meaningful elements in house training your dog. Be patient, your dog doesn’t know what is wrong so it’s you that must dictate what should and what should not be done.

If your pet makes an error tell him “no” but do not punish your dog. Remember positive reinforcement works a lot more effectively when training your dog, than the old dog training school of using negative reinforcement. Punishing your dog or hitting your dog is part of negative reinforcement training and should be avoided at all times. Giving your dog a treat or talking sweet and kindly to your dog is part of positive reinforcement and it’s the type of training you should use with your dog.

Narrowing down your choices of dog obedience schools can be challenging, especially if you are a new dog owner that doesn’t know what to look for in a dog training school.

Many new dog owners believe that dog obedience school is only suited for puppy obedience training and that their older dogs will not be accepted into the class. Although some schools focus on puppy training, most schools offer classes for dogs of all ages and all levels of training.

Remember that while dog obedience training is to help teach the basic commands, it can also be a great way to spend time with your dog and to help them bond with you. If you are having a specific problem with your pet, such as they are rolling in stinky stuff or running away every time you open the door, there are also classes that are specifically geared towards this type of obedience problems.

Once you decide that you are interested in attending dog obedience training with your pooch, it is best to take a few minutes to research exactly what to look for in an obedience school.

Types of Training:
Some dog owners might be looking for basic command training, while others will be looking for advanced training to use their dogs for agility challenges, fowl hunting and retrieving and even for training. As well, some schools will focus on a certain type of training, so it is important to consider whether their training matches your needs as a dog owner. It is also helpful to look for a dog training school that offers various levels of obedience training, in case you would like to continue on with your dog training to help remain consistent with your dog.

Methods of Training:
Before you rush into the nearest dog training school and sign up for classes, you should attend an orientation or another training class to get an idea of what type of training the instructor or instructors will be using. Remember that just as you might not agree with the method a fitness instructor uses for teaching a class, you also might not agree with the training methods an instructor uses for teaching a dog obedience class.

Instructor Experience:
One of the most important things to look for is the type of experience the instructor has working with dogs. Are they simply a dog lover that is really good with animals or have they actually received formal dog obedience training? Remember that not all states will require dog instructors to have formal training, so it is up to your discretion to determine whether the instructor is suited to teach classes.

References:
Because there are so many different schools to choose from, you really should select a school that offers references from satisfied customer. You may also want to verify these references by asking veterinarians or local dog owners that have completed dog obedience schools.

Dogs and kids can live together harmoniously, if the situation is properly understood and carefully handled.Friendships between dogs and kids are both wonderful and character building for the children.

Most dog bites inflicted on kids are by the family pet, or a neighbours dog. It is not that the dog is aggressive, it is just that Mums and Dads do not understand that children, and particularly babies, act very differently to adults, and it is this unusual behaviour that upsets the dogs.

My own children were brought up with German Shepherds, supposedly well know as aggressive dogs. The dogs were fairly anti-social to strangers but to the family they were totally trust worthy. I like to think that it was because I taught the kids to behave properly around and towards the dogs.

When dogs and kids are living together it is the kids that need to be taught to treat all dogs with the greatest respect, and to understand that dogs are not toys. As soon as babies are crawling they need to be told to be kind to the family dog. Puppies are never too young to learn, neither are babies. If you have just acquired a new puppy do not let it chew you or play nip, good training for when it is a fully grown dog.

Dogs protect all things that they care about, whether that be the house, their diner, the car, their bed, kids have to understand to leave dogs alone at certain times or certain places. Some dogs are, by nature, herding dogs, so these may chase a child if it runs away. This could excite the dog to attack.

Some dogs would get defensive if they are cornered or have some one standing over them. Kids should be taught to not scream, cuddle the dog tightly or pinch them. It should be remembered that as a dog gets older it could become less tolerant, so the family dog that has always been so good with the kids suddenly nips a child. Old dog get deaf so cannot hear a child approaching, so may nip out of surprise. It is not the dog’s fault!

Kids need to be told to never approach a strange dog, without asking permission. If the dog is out without it’s owner leave it alone.

To always approach in a steady quiet manor.

No teasing, yelling, hugging, pinching, pulling or chasing.

Always leave mothers with young alone.

Never try to stop a dogfight!

If you are approached by a strange dog, stand still; let the dog sniff you, no wriggling fingers, put them in your pocket if you have one.

Do not stare at the dog, and never run away.

If the dog is barking or growling, slowly walk away, keeping the dog in view.

Be sure your kids understand the difference between your own dog and a strange dog.

It is wise to never leave a baby or very young children alone together, no matter how well you think you know the dog.

This all sounds a little forbidding but dogs and kids really can have lots of fun together.

			    About the Author

I have owned dogs for 42 years. Learning to train from my mother who trained to county level. Over the years I have found that the old ways of training are not always the best, that praise is the best form of training, and the younger the dog, the easier it is to train. http://www.dogtrainingproblems.biz
